The Arcadian was a passenger liner that was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1915 and then used as a troopship in the Mediterranean. On 15th April, 1917, HMT Arcadian, as she was then known, was en route to Alexandria in Egypt from Salonika in Greece when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-74 when 26 miles north-east of the Greek island of Milos. She had 1335 troops and crew aboard and sank within six minutes with the loss of 279 soldiers and sailors. One of the soldiers who did not survive was Wilfred Phipps of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry.. |
